Håkon III of Norway

Håkon III Sverreson (1170 - 1204) was king of Norway of 1202 with 1204.

When Sverre died his/her only son surviving Håkon born about 1170 went up on the throne. Sigurd Lavard the elder half-brother of Håkon which had died in 1200 left a young person wire Guttorm Sigurdsson but nobody planned to reserve part of the kingdom to him. The principle which the kingdom was to be controlled by a single sovereign was tacitly admitted by all.

On its bed of dead Sverre a letter with his/her son had written in whom it recommended to him to be reconciled with the clergy. Håkon invited the bishops who resided at the Denmark to meet it in order to conclude an arrangement. The prelates were happy of this offer which put an end to their exile and the archbishop revoked even the interdict without awaiting the permission of the Pope. An arrangement was concluded and a proclamation was made whose terms do not make it possible to determine the concessions made by each part! It is however certain that the king had not yielded on the positions of Sverre except on minor points. The bishops had to swear allegiance to him and to recognize it like their legitimate sovereign.

The party Bagler had been weakened so much by its defeats which it had only little chance of success in the event of resumption of the conflict and it had learned the little from real assistance that represented the interventions of the pope in the form of Interdit and of Excommunication.

The clergy thus ceased being opposed to the king and remained with the variation of the future fights for the capacity. Baglers which was always ordered by the bishop of Oslo Nicolas became a political faction and their conflict with the Birkebeiner lost very real religious significance. As long as Håkon III lived Baglers did not undertake anything and its right to the throne was not called in question but its peaceful reign was brutally stopped by its sudden death at the new year 1204.

Håkon III Sverreson was buried in the cathedral of Bergen and was regarded as died without heir. Guttorm Sigurdsson, the son of its Sigurd brother, 4 years old was selected as king.
