Gwent

Gwent , is an old Welsh kingdom in the south-east of the Wales, on the Welsh Steps, the river Wye separating it from England in the east, and the estuary of the river Severn separating it in the south from the Somerset.

History

Occupied since the Paleolithic one, the Romans build there the fort of Caerleon, also attached to the legend arthurienne. The kingdom of Gwent located between the rivers Usk and Wye was formed at the time of the departure of the Roman troops of Brittany and survived until the arrival of Norman about 1067-1091. Those divided the country into seigniories: Abergavenny, Monmouth, Striguil (Chepstow) and Usk.

After the Act of Union, the county was called Monmouthshire, and one spoke a long time about Wales & Monmouthshire , the charts of Wales until in the years 1970 not revealing this county. Separated a long time from Wales by the government of London, this county is become again Gwent and is again joined together today with the Wales.

Language

Area of Welsh language until XIXè, the language disappeared with the industrial revolution.
