Guyart of the Mills

Before the edition of the Historiale Bible, one knew a French bible intended for the students of the University, the Bible known as of the thirteenth century. It is about a text which one does not have any more that the book of the Genesis preserved in some rare manuscripts and inserted in introdution of the Bibles historiales with which the readers seemed to confuse it.

The Bible historiale is presented in the form of a glosée bible, i.e. a bible where appear the translations of the paragraphs of the Vulgate in characters noble, and intercalated between each chapter, a series of comments. In beautiful letters thus appear the translations of the Vulgate immediately followed by the translation of the same passage extracted from Comestor. Titles of chapters, extracts of Comestor, are inserted in red in the page. Its text is thus above all an original translation of the Vulgate accompanied by the translation of the stories of the Bible. As the translation of the Vulgate in the Bible of 1250 was accompanied by the translation of Glossa ordinaria.

Biography

France had, in the person of Guyart-of-Mills or Guyart of the Mills (first is thus the orthography retained by Paulin Paris in the first edition of the catalog of the manuscripts of the Library of the king), an extraordinary historian scholar. The birth date of Guyart of the Mills is carried in the prolog of its Bible Historiale, 1251. He becomes canon of Saint Pierre of Surface in 1291 and completes his work in 1294. Its work is not a simple translation of the text of Comestor, but on the contrary, into several places it changed “the economy of work”, like it says it itself in its foreword. The Historiale Bible of which he is the single author is not only one translation of the text of the Master écolâtre, but in more one interpolated juxtaposition of the translated text of the Vulgate. It is thus there truly about a Bible glosée in vulgar language suggested with laic that Guyart of the Mills writes. The testimony of Paulin Paris, familiar of this Bible by the position which it occupied in 1836, is, from this point of view, invaluable: “It was for the society peoples that our Guyart of the Mills translated the Bible into a Francois, more than one century after death of Petrus Comestor”. The success of the Bible historiale was never contradicted during time, it is a priori its work which inspired the edition of Jean de Rély and the pupil of J.J. Bank, in his work hunting for the badly advised antique dealers and bibliographers recalls that:

Pierre François Orsini, high on the pulpit of Saint Pierre of Surface under the name of Benoit XIII, who had conceived in the order of Dominique saint, where it had made profession, a so high veneration for this history, had ordered under his pontificate, of which the first year is the year 1724, with the Quirini cardinal to publish a new edition of it and with all the ecclesiastics of his kind to provide itself some, hardly not to be not promoted with the orders.

The history of the Bible historiale thus constitutes the official slope of the history of the Bible translated into French . An edition is currently in hand.
