Guy Thys

Guy Thys (December 6th 1922 - 2003) was the coach of the Belgian national team of Football (the Red Diables) more crowned success. Thys was born with Antwerp and began its career from footballer during the Forties and Fifties, in Beerschot, Daring Molenbeek and the Standard of Liege. In 1952 and 1953, it was selected twice in Belgian national team.

From 1954 to 1958 it combined the functions of player and trainer on behalf of the Cercle Bruges KSV. In 1959, Guy Thys carried the same double cassette (player-trainer) to Lokeren. The same year, he became trainer with full-time in Wezel, then with Herentals, the Union Saint-Gilloise, and the Antwerp.

The Antwerp knew one period ostentation under the cane of Thys by gaining the Coupe of Belgium of football and by offering two places of second in championship to his supporters.

These good performances are one of the reasons of its nomination at the station of national sport selector in 1976, station which it will occupy until 1989 with the key 45 victories in 101 meetings. At the time from World the 86 in Mexico, it took along the Belgian team until in semi-final of the world cup. After a rather poor first turn, against any waiting, the red devils beat the team of the U.S.S.R. in eighth of finale on the score from 4 to 3 after prolongation. At the time of the quarterfinals, Belgium made good match with the team of Spain. The score was of 1 goal everywhere for the two teams. But the shootings with the goal were fatal with Spanish, the red devils did not tremble and were qualified for the semi-finals. But at this stage of the competition, it is Argentina which drew up itself in front of the Belgian team and Maradonna put an end to the great adventure by marking the two goals of the match. Nevertheless, on their return in Belgium, the red devils were to celebrate by thousands of people on the Large one places from Brussels. The red devils had written one of the most beautiful pages of the Belgian foot in Mexico City. Eight month after his resignation, Guy Thys reappeared with the head of the Red Devils to the whole beginning of 1990 to ensure the qualification Italian Mundial. He managed to take along Belgium to Italy or England and David Platt eliminated, into 1/8 of finale, the devils at the end of a match haletant and undecided. Thys was withdrawn definitively in 1991.

Under its direction the Red Diables took part twice in the Championnats of Europe, and in 3 world cups (Argentina 1982, Mexico City 1986, Italia 90).
