Guy Ier de Lévis

Guy Ier de Lévis (1180 - 1233), lord of Mirepoix and Maréchal of the faith was illustrated during the Albigensian Crusade as a lieutenant of his suzerain Simon IV of Montfort.

Guy de Lévis is resulting from the Maison of Lévis. His/her father, Philippe de Lévis is the founder of the line. This seigneurery belonged to the royal field in 1204. He marries Guiburge de Montfort, the sister of Simon IV of Montfort. From their union were born two children:

  • Jeanne (1205 † 1284), married to Philippe II of Montfort († 1270), lord of Castrate.
  • Guy II of Lévis, his heir (1210 † 1247)

In 1209, following the call to the crusade launched by the pope, it was placed under the orders of Simon de Montfort and played an active share in the Albigensian Crusade. It will take share with the seat of Béziers. A little later Simon de Montfort, lavishes with his close relations lieutenants will give him the castle of Mirepoix, which counts among the territories conquered by the crusaders with the Languedoc. Guy de Lévis also will take the title of Maréchal of the faith or of Maréchal of the crusade .

In 1210, we find Guy de Lévis with the seat of Termes, then of Castelnaudary in September 1211. It will also take part in the seat of Beaucaire in 1216 and in that of Toulouse which began in September 1217 where Simon de Montfort found death.

The Traité of Paris of 1229 will confirm this whole of possessions since item 15 of this treaty provides that the Ground of the Marshal is left in Guy de Lévis. He thus sees himself again allotting the ground of Mirepoix and the Pays of Olmes taken on the field of the county of Foix. Being pressed on this act, the Maison of Lévis will be established in the area lasting seven centuries.

In 1233, Guy de Lévis dies. It will be buried in the abbey of Notre-Dame of the Rock of Lévis-Saint-Name that it had done itself to build.
