The project was initially imagined by the American historian Doane Robinson. The two presidential faces of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were quickly joined by those of Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. The Dynamite was partly used to remove large parts of the rough rock of the Colline.

Borglum was also obliged to traverse the world to find funds so that its work can be carried out in the long term. It carved in parallel the memorial of Thomas Paine with Paris and of Woodrow Wilson in Poland. During its periods of absence, the work of the Rushmore Mount was supervised by his/her Lincoln son. When he died in Chicago in 1941, his/her son completed the work of his father.
