Biography
military career
Gustave III of Sweden godfather of Gustave of Hesse-Darmstadt named this last lieutenant of the Swedish guards. At seventeen years, Gustave de Hesse-Homburg started a military career in the Swedish army. After the assassination of the king of Sweden, it returned in Hesse-Homburg. His/her older brother Frederic VI of Hesse-Homburg was useful in the Austrian army, for Gustave de Hesse-Homburg it was an obviousness, it would also be useful in the same army. He fought in the Bade, the Wurtemberg and Low-Austria. In 1801, it was promoted with the rank of commander, in 1805 it entered the light horsemen. It was distinguished at the time of the retirement of the archduke Charles de Habsbourg - Teschen and was named on February 1st 1805, lieutenant-colonel. Of 1805 with 1809 it was in garrison in Hungary, then entered in Kürassieren-Hohenzollern and was named commander of this regiment. It took part in the battles of Aspern the 21 and May 22nd 1806 (Essling) and of Wagram the July 6th 1809. " Beautiful Gustave" was like his/her older brothers, true Hesse-Homburg, it made watch of bravery on the battle fields, it obtained the military decoration of Marie-Therese (decoration of the Austrian Empire). At the time of a battle, it was seriously wounded. It took part in the war of liberation of the Germany and at the time of the Hundred Days made the countryside of France.
Marriage
The February 12th 1818, Gustave de Hesse-Homburg married his/her niece Louise d' Anhalt (girl of its sister Amélie de Hesse-Homburg). His wife was reached of deafness what was the cause of its insulation in their couple.
Reign
In 1840, his/her brother Philippe de Hesse-Homburg was named governor of the fortress of Frankfurt, Gustave de Hesse-Homburg ensured officially the responsibilities for head of government of Hesse-Homburg. Died of his/her brother Philippe de Hesse-Homburg occurred in 1846, Gustave de Hesse-Homburg succeeded to him. The Revolution of 1848 had effects on the small State of Hesse-Homburg, the citizens again claimed a constitution for their country. Gustave de Hesse-Homburg made them the promise to write this Constitution. This promise did not engage it with nothing since he died the September 8th 1848. His/her single son, heir to the landgravat, preceded it in death the January 4th 1848, victim of a Grippe (Influenza) with Bonn.
Gustave de Hesse-Homburg was buried in the crypt of the castle of Homburg.
Gustave de Hesse-Homburg belonged to the line of Hesse-Homburg, this third branch resulted from the second branch, that of the Hesse-Darmstadt, itself resulting from the first branch of the Maison of Hesse. The six branches of the House of Hesse result from the first branch of the House of the Brabant. Gustave de Hesse-Homburg was the last but one landgrave of Hesse-Homburg. This line died out with his/her brother Ferdinand de Hesse-Homburg deceased in 1866.
