Gustave Singier

Gustave Singier is a nonfigurative painter French of Belgian origin , born the February 11th 1909, dead the May 5th 1984.

Biography

Gustave Singier was born on February 11th, 1909 with Warneton (Flanders-Western Belgian). Arrived at Paris in 1919, it follows 1923 to 1926 the courses of the school Boulle, works of 1927 with 1939 as draftsman in a company of fitting of stores and turns to painting.

In 1936, Singier meets Charles Walch which puts it in contact with the artistic world and starts to expose in Living rooms. In 1939, it becomes acquainted with its neighbor, Alfred Manessier, of his friends Elvire Jan and Jean Moal. Mobilized the following year in the Belgian army, it is sent to Bagnols-sur-Cèze after the invasion of the Belgium. Of 1941 with 1944, it works in the workshop of cabinet work of his/her father.

Singier takes part in the exposure “Twenty young painters of French tradition” organized in 1941 by Jean Bazaine, first exposure of painting of avant-garde under the Occupation. He takes refuge in 1944 at Manessier, in the Perche where Elvire Jan, Jean Moal, Jean Bertholle will also remain, the writer Camille Bourniquel, the sculptors François Stahly and Etienne Martin.

In 1945, it exposes to the Salon of May of which it is with his friends one of the founders. It is in 1947 French naturalized and binds friendship with the poet Jean Lescure. The Gallery Billiet- Caputo carries out in 1949 its first personal exposure, the Galerie of France of Myriam Prévot and Gildo Caputo presents its work then regularly.

Of 1951 with 1954, it teaches with the Académie Ranson; of 1967 with 1978 with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the fine arts of Paris. He is founding member in 1975 Living room of Toulon, in 1976 of the Living room of Vitry-sur-Seine, inspector in 1978 with the Prix of Rome.

Singier built many paperboards of Tapisserie S and Vitraux, mosaic, costumes and decorations (in particular for the NPT of Jean Vilar and the Opera of Paris). He illustrated his engravings or lithographies several books.

He dies on May 5th, 1984 in Paris and is buried with the Cimetière Montparnasse.

In 1990 Gustave Singier makes its record world for the sale of one of its paintings with 897.258 Franc French. (source associated auctioneers)
