Gustave Moreau

Gustave Moreau painter, engraver and Draftsman French, enthusiast of Mystical and symbolism, born with Paris the April 6th 1826 and died in the same city the April 18th 1898.
Biography
Elected with the Academy of the Art schools in 1888, it is named professor in 1892, and counts among its pupils Adolphe Beaufrère, Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and Georges Rouault. It goes on many journeys in Italy, to Rome, Florence, Milan, Pisa, His, Naples, Venice, spends the months to copy works of the Titien, Léonard de Vinci and the frescos of Michel-Angel of the Sixtine Vault. It borrows much from the Masters of the Renaissance and also integrates exotic reasons and orientaux. Large draftsman, Moreau had at the end of his life of many drawings, photographs, books illustrated which were used as a basis for its inspiration picturale.
Posterity
He bequeaths to the town of Paris his workshop, located in a private mansion of 14 rue de La Rochefoucauld (IXe), as well as the whole of works being there (a considerable share of its work belongs to private collections). This legacy of almost 850 paintings or paperboards, 350 watercolours, and more than 13000 drawings and copies will give rise to the museum Gustave Moreau which was officially opened with the public the January 13rd 1903. En 1912, André Breton visit the museum and comes out from it deeply upset by works of the peintre.
