Gustave Ier Vasa

Gustave Ier Vasa or Gustav Vasa (born the May 12th 1496 and dead the September 29th 1560) was king of Sweden of 1523 until its death

Biography

At 24 years it directs in 1520 a rebellion against the Denmark which invaded Sweden. It is pressed on an army of 4  000 peasants, merchants of Lübeck and the Emperor Charles Quint. The rebellion was started by the day called “Blood bath of Stockholm”, where 82 noble was killed, of which the father of Gustave.

The June 6th 1523, Gustav Vasa seizes the capacity in Sweden and drives out the Danes of Stockholm, breaking the Union of Kalmar. Elected official king by Riksdag of Strängnäs, it imposes the Luthéranisme, develops the economy of the country and reorganizes the kingdom (administration, justice, taxation). He reinforces, in the years which follow, his political power with the detriment of the large feudal ones and reorganizes the Church. The Roman Catholic church having supported Christian II of Denmark, is private of any political power and Gustave confiscates to him its goods (1527).

Under the pressure of Gustave, Riksdag adopts in 1544 the law on hereditary monarchy with the profit of the line of Vasa. It converts also the Swedes with Protestantism and requisitions the bells of the churches to be able to pay a debt which it owed to the merchants of Lübeck.

Gustave Vasa creates a made up standing army mercenaries. It devotes 70% of the budget of the State to its maintenance. The military service is obligatory. With its advent, it faces serious financial problems. It substitutes for the round parts of strange square tokens requiring less metal ( knipplingar , of knippa , “to cross with shears”). It makes work the mines of money and copper and lance a plan of colonization of the grounds in Sweden.

With its death (1560) Gustave left an effective government and flourishing finances.
