Gustav Heinemann

Gustav Heinemann , born the July 23rd 1899 and dead the July 7th 1976, was a German politician . Federal minister on several occasions, it is federal President between 1969 and 1974.

Political career

Founding member of the Union Christian Democrat (CDU), he is also Maire of Essen in the immediate future post-war period.

federal minister for the Interior between 1949 and 1950, it enters in divergence with the chancellor Adenauer and the leading authorities of its party on the question of the rearmament of Germany. It then leaves CDU to found in 1952 the Gesamtdeutsche Volkspartei.

Following the failure of this new movement, it integrates the social democrat Parti (SPD). It is allocated to the federal government between 1966 and 1969, in the capacity as federal minister for Justice, function within the framework of which it will show of a unanimously recognized tolerance and an open-minded, in particular at the time of the student's demonstrations of 1968.

Presented by SPD, then supported by FDP, he is elected federal President on March 5th, 1969, carrying the election with the 3rd turn, of a short head in front of his colleague of the government, the Minister for Defense Gerhard Schröder, is presented by the CDU].

At the conclusion of its mandate, he refuses to request again the votes of the Bundesversammlung, whereas he was however ensured of an easy re-election. The liberal Walter Scheel succeeds to him.

Gustav Heinemann will remain during thirty years the only federal President social democrat, until the election in 1999 of his/her former comrade of GVP, Johannes Rau, which is also the husband of its grand-daughter.

The proper girl of Heinemann, ATU Ranke-Heinemann, had also stood as candidate at the time of this election with the support of PDS, without success.
