Geography
History
The first known origins go back to 1285 when the locality was given guarantees some with the Lord Conrad Werner de Hattstatt. In 1434, Gunsbach is sold with the family of Ribeaupierre and remains their property until the French revolution in 1789.Names of the locality, like its orthography, were often modified during the centuries. In a manuscript of XIIIe century, one speaks about Heinricus de Gunnisbach and Cunradus and Walterus de Gunnisbach….in Banno Gunnensbach; in 1339 one also finds Gonnisbach and Gunnespach; from 1434 to 1536 Gunspach; in 1575 Ginsbach; in 1779 Guinspach; from 1812 to 1857 again Gunspach. Starting from 1868 GUNSBACH like one still currently writes it. The interpretation of the suffix “BACH” comes from brook; prefix “GUNS” could come from Germanic name GUNO or GUNO indicating the broom.
Gunsbach is known in the whole world thanks to its host of honor, Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Prize of the peace, which spent many years there.
