The Gulf of Mexico is a gulf of the Atlantic Ocean, located at the south-east of the North America. It extends on a surface from 1  550  000 km ².

The principal countries or islands which border the Gulf of Mexico are:

• the Mexico in the west and the south;
• Cuba in south-east;
• the the United States in the North-East and north.

The Gulf of Mexico communicates to south-east with the Caribbean Sea by the Canal of Yucatán and to the east with the Atlantic Ocean by the Détroit of Florida.
