The gulf of Finland is an Eastern arm of the the Baltic separating the Finland from the Estonia. The delta of the Neva, to the bottom of this gulf, offers a maritime opening to the Russia, affirmed by the presence of the second plus big city of this country, Saint-Pétersbourg.

The strategic issue of this gulf is relatively important for Russia, since it represents one of its four maritime frontages giving on not closed seas, with the White Mer (Mourmansk and Arkhangelsk), the Black Sea (Azov) and the Pacific Ocean (Vladivostok). The opening of the Baltic on the oceans is however limited by the Skagerrak, strait controlled by the Denmark, member of NATO.
In addition, it allows a direct relationship with the enclave of Kaliningrad, the ex-Königsberg, open on the Baltic and girdled by the Poland and the Lithuania.

The ecological state of the gulf of Finland is common to the whole of the Baltic, with a continuous increase in the phenomenon of Eutrophisation due to a loss of Oxygène in sea-beds, probable result of a slow replacement of the water of the Baltic.
