Toponymy

The toponym Guinarthe appears in the forms Guinarte (1385, censier of Béarn), Guinarta (towards 1540, reformation of Béarn), Sanctus Martinus de Guinarte (1612, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron), Parenties-Guinarthe at its meeting with Parenties, on June 20th, 1842 and Guinarthe-Parenties on May 16th, 1845.
The toponym Parenties appears in the forms Paranthies (1385, censier of Béarn), Paranthias (towards 1540, reformation of Béarn) and Saint-Pierre de Paranties (1612, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).

History

Paul Raymond note that in 1385, Guinarthe counted 13 fires and Parenties 9, and depended on the Bailliage of Sauveterre. There was a laic abbey with Parenties, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn
To the XVIIe century, part of the seigniory of Guinarthe belonged to the chapter of Holy Spirit, now district integrated into Bayonne.
Guinarthe and Parenties met on June 20th, 1842, then on May 16th, 1845.

Culture and inheritance

Small village inhabitant of Béarn, Guinarthe-Parenties is bordered by the gave the Saison. This river materializes the border between the Béarn and the Basque Country.
The festival committee organizes several traditional animations such as:
  • a meal in February when one can taste pig in various forms,
  • a pastoral meal in July,
  • a boiled chicken in October. This meal is followed local festivals which finish the following day after one night of festival and music.
