Guimarães is a city and municipality (in Portuguese: concelho or município ) of the Portugal, located in the District of Braga, the Northern area.

History

In 840, Alphonse de León organizes a council of bishops there.

The monastery and the castle were built at the 11th century.

In 1095, the count Henri of Portugal, father of Alphonse Ier, installs its court there, with the result that Alphonse Ier proclaims the kingdom of Portugal there.

Guimarães will remain the capital of the county then kingdom of Portugal until in 1260, year of the transfer of the court to Lisbon, after the completion of the Reconquête in 1252.

The December 13rd 2001, Guimarães was declared World heritage of humanity by UNESCO for its monuments which date from the Moyen-âge and which was remarkably preserved showing the evolution of architecture during times.
