Guillotière

Guillotière is today a district of Lyon, located on left bank of the the Rhone.

Etymology

The origin of the name of Guillotière is badly known. According to some authors, it would come from Guy-L' hostière , according to the belief according to which it was about a place where the druids deposited the GUI of oak ( Guy ). Others support that this name comes from Grillotière because of the multitude of called animals grillets which were there. But Paradin, on the contrary, supports that this suburb had been named thus in 1500, because of the grelots and bells of the mules of which it is never dismantled. Perhaps it is still about an old property belonging to a sior Guillot (in the same way that the name of Mulatière would come from the property of certain Mr. Mulat) but this method of construction is late compared to the first mentions of the name of Guillotière on the charts and in the written acts.

History

This suburb of Lyon developed with the Moyen-âge, on left bank of the Rhone, starting from the head of the bridge of the Rhone, quickly named bridge of Guillotière, the Place of the Bridge (today place Gabriel Péri), on the road of Lyon with Chambéry and with the Italy (current trunk road 6), called Main street of Guillotière . It was a suburb of innkeepers and landlords, whose jurisdiction was disputed between the Lyonnais and the Dauphiné.

At the time of the French revolution, Guillotière was initially attached to the Département of Isere. It was then attached to the Département of the Rhone, then with the commune of Lyon, in 1852, to form the 3 {{E}} district.

Nowadays, Guillotière more particularly indicates the northern half of the 7th district and the south-west of the 3rd district. The subway station Guillotière is located under the old Place of the Bridge (Place Gabriel Péri).

Social composition

The bridge of Guillotière was the single bridge of Lyon a long time on the Rhone, which gave to the suburb of Guillotière the statute of single “main door” East of the city. This role persisted in time, and today, the there immigrant populations are numerous, and follow the course of the large waves of immigration: after the installation of the Italy NS at the XIXe century, they will be the populations originating in the the Maghreb, Turkey or in Asia which will settle here, testimony of this history, the presence of the large grocer Bahadourian founded by a Armenian. They currently tend to leave the place to those of Eastern Europe. In addition, the district loses a little this role, because it follows the fashion of return of the populations of the middle-classes (living before in houses with the periphery), in the downtown areas. Many buildings thus currently are renovated there or rebuilt to accommodate these social classes a little easier.
