Guillermo Gaddis

School of engineers, attached to the Université Claude Bernard Lyon I, located on the campus of Endowed, with Villeurbanne, and proposing a diploma for the occupation of engineer in three years in four fields of studies.

History

The school was born in 1992 from the will from professor Gerard Fontaine (then president of the university Claude-Bernard Lyon 1), and from professor Paul Béthoux (then vice-president UCBL), to create within the university Claude-Bernard, a training of engineer.
  • 1995: the first graduate promotion of the ISTIL.
  • Within the area the Rhone-Alps, the ISTIL belongs to network R2A of the internal schools of engineers at the universities, which proposes 21 specialities in 6 schools, that is to say a flow of 800 graduates per annum.
  • 2005: Will of the ISTIL to integrate the network of schools Polytech'

Admission requirements

  • Integration on file and maintenance after a scientific bac+2 (CPGE ATS, TS, STPI, DEUG, L2, HAD), contest ARCHIMEDES E3A and E4A, banks Pt (CPGE MP, PC, PSI, Pt) mainly in 1st year.
  • Exceptionally after a BTS (mechanical and industrial automatisms, computer-integrated manufacturing, electrical engineering)
  • In a complementary way in 2nd year after a bac+4 (on file).

Studies with the ISTIL

Presentation and joint base

The studies with the ISTIL are divided into 4 distinct dies: " Mathematics Applied and Modeling (ex Modélisation and Scientific computation) " , " Industriels" systems; , " Matériaux&Surfaces" and " Mécanique" genius; . The pupils follow a joint base during first half of the year and are then integrated into the various departments. The specialities are the subject of specific lesson, as described hereafter, to which common modules in social sciences are added, in trades of the engineer and languages:

  • introduction to the patents
  • sociology & ergonomics of work
  • international business
  • industrial marketing
  • management of projects
  • innovation, communication
  • accountancy-management
  • right of the businesses.
  • languages: German, English, Spaniard. Possibility of studying other languages via a partnership with the INSA of Lyon.

Mechanical engineering

Missions

To train mechanical engineers general practitioners, but having had the possibility of specializing is in Mechanics of the Fluid or Mechanics of the Solids.

  • interdisciplinary Approach of the problems arising from the mechanical engineering industry.

  • Training of the whole of the fields which constitute the speciality of the die:
modeling, design and production, by considering the socio-economic aspects.
  • scientific and technical Competences.

Strong points

Multi-field formation based on a program including/understanding of the lesson in matter fundamental and applied.

An important place is reserved for practical works and the projects where are treated concrete cases coming from industrial environment. A particular stress is laid on the modeling and the digital simulation of the industrial problems.

This formation opens also more and more with international via training courses of end of studies in company abroad, but also with the possibility of carrying out part of these studies abroad, in particular in England, in the United States, in Canada or in Europe.

All sectors of the mechanical engineering industry, in France and abroad: car, aeronautics & space, genius of the processes, environment, energy production…

Means

The die is pressed on a potential of teacher-researchers and researchers working in the research laboratories, and in particular those of the university Claude-Bernard Lyon 1, Lyon Power station or of the INSA Lyon. Speakers of the industrial world and professionals contribute their share and the framing in the projects. For the hands-on training, the die has these proper installations of practical works as well as punts experimental forms placed at the disposal by the research laboratories.

Possible specialization in last year

The school course is composed in third year of a joint base and specialized options. Here a small example of the options suggested thus that of the courses which compose them (note: the courses constituting these options are likely to evolve/move each year).

  • Mechanical of the fluids:
    • Aéroacoustique : The purpose of this course is comprehension and modeling of the noise pollutions generated by the flow of a fluid.
    • Dynamic of gases: The purpose of this course is comprehension of the phenomena inherent in the flow of a gas. One thus learns how to model the shock waves while being based on a commercial software named " Fluent".
    • complex Flows and polyphase flows: The purpose of this course is comprehension of the behaviors of the fluids not Newtoniens thus of the polyphase flows (ex: flows with bubbles, flows with nonmiscible liquid phases, etc).
    • Turboshaft engine: the purpose of this course is comprehension of the operation of a turboshaft engine (turbine of power, turbojet…). It brings the bases of the construction of a turboshaft engine (drawing of a turboshaft engine, etc).
  • Mechanical of the Solids

Materials and Surfaces

Missions

To train engineers general practitioners out of materials having more specific competences analyzes some, characterization and surface treatment, CAD, quality.

Strong points

The die consists of a multi-field course, voluntarily general practitioner, in Sciences and Engineering of Surfaces and Interfaces:

  • Formulation and placement of polymers & adhesive
  • Treatments and coatings Technical surface
  • of analysis and characterization of surfaces and thin films
  • Methods of Non destructive testing
  • Resistance of Materials, mechanics of the damage
  • Modeling CAD (ProEngineer Wildfire 2.0), modeling of the thermodynamic, physical and chemical phenomena (Femlab 3).
  • Glasses and ceramics, metallurgy and treatment of metals, nanotechnologies,…

In 2nd year, in complement of teaching out of Glasses & Ceramics, the pupils can follow an optional teaching in the field of the Biomaterials.

In 3rd year, the pupils have the possibility of following Master de Recherche, in double-course, and thus of possibly continuing their formation by a thesis. The die currently is opened with International via training courses of end of studies in company or laboratory abroad, but also thanks to the possibility of carrying out the totality of the last year abroad in a university partner.

Means

Teaching is exempted by a team of teacher-researchers of the university Claude-Bernard Lyon 1, of Lyon Power station or of the INSA Lyon. Interventions of the industrial world punctuate the formation and come to illustrate the theoretical lesson. The die profits in the buildings from the ISTIL from

  • 1 room from practical works dedicated to the development and the characterization from polymeric materials:
rheometers, DSC/ATD, SEC, tensile testing machine, spectrometer, etc
  • 1 room of placement of polymers: Extrusion machine Bi-screw, press, etc
  • 1 room of practical works dedicated to the study of divided materials.
It is also pressed on the equipment and experimental platforms of the University Claude-Bernard Lyon 1 and the INSA of Lyon to ensure the great diversity of its practical lesson.

Mathematics applied and modeling (ex-modeling and scientific computation)

Missions

To train engineers mathematicians with the applications:

  • Modeling of complex problems by a mathematical approach

  • Control of the theoretical aspects of these models

Strong points

Multi-field formation based on a broad culture of mathematics applied and a good control of the computer tools (in particular for the parallel architectures)

Industrial systems

Missions

To train engineers general practitioners, with the multi-field technical skills, in direct catch with the problems related to the production. The objective is thus to place at the disposal of industry engineers of " Process" , of scientific culture and technique as broad as possible. Thus one will find in the programs of the major matters such as the mechanics of the solid and the continuous mediums, hydraulics, the electronics, the automatic and the numerical methods, supplemented by courses of quality, production control, right management, economy and.

Strong points

  • the trained engineers have a broad spectrum of knowledge which enables them to adapt to all industrial environments whatever are the branch of industry and the discipline.

  • They place guarantor of method, as an expert tools and/or management of studies or projects.
  • They constitute excellent transverse bonds for the whole of the functions of the company, of the production to management.
A great number of lesson being exempted by industrial speakers, at the exit of the school, the world of the company is already familiar for them.

Diploma

  • In second year:
    • For the pupils of the die " Materials and Surfaces": Obligatory Training course-project, in the field of Research, in partnership with the laboratories of the University Claude Bernard Lyon1/CNRS. Duration 2 months, in May and June.
    • For the pupils of the other dies: training course assisting nonobligatory engineer (2 to 3 months, summer holidays)
  • In 3rd year: Training course engineer of end of studies, in France or abroad.
    • Lasted: 6 months, as from March.
    • Possibility of carrying out one year supplements abroad in last year, within the multiple universities partners in Europe, the USA, Canada.
