Guillaume de Clèves

Guillaume de Clèves , known as the Rich person , born with Düsseldorf the July 28th 1516, died in Dusseldorf the January 5th 1592, was duke of Gueldre and count de Zutphen of 1538 with 1543, duke of Clèves and count of Marck of 1539 with 1592, duke of Juliers ( Guillaume IX ), of Berg ( Guillaume IV ) and count de Ravensberg of 1543 with 1592. It was wire of Jean III, duke of Clèves, of Berg, count of Marck and Ravensberg and Marie, duchess of Juliers.

In 1539, it accepted emperor the duchy of Gueldre and the county of Zutphen, but to the emperor in 1543 returned them, by the Traité of Venloo. Gueldre and Zutphen were then incorporated in the Spanish Netherlands.

It had a brilliant court and invited there humanistic, like Erasme, Johann Weyer, the cartographer Mercator and the scientist Pighius and of the reformed . Particularly sumptuous festivals were given there.

His/her son and heir Charles Frederic died in 1575, and it left its states to its second wire, weak of spirit and rejoined with the catholiscism, and in prey with the ambitions of the Habsbourg and the Netherlands.

Marriage and children

He had married in first weddings the July 13rd 1541 Jeanne d' Albret (1528 † 1572), girl of Henri II of Albret, king de Navarre and of Marguerite of Angouleme and niece of the king de France François I {{er}}. The marriage was cancelled in 1546.

It had been remarié with Ratisbon the July 18th 1546 Marie de Habsbourg (1531 † 1581), archduchess of Austria, girl of Ferdinand I {{er}}, Germanic emperor and of Anne Javellon. They had had:

  • Marie Eléonore de Clèves (1550 † 1608), married in 1573 with Albert Frederic of Prussia (1553 † 1618), duke of Prussia
  • Anne (1552 † 1632), married in 1574 with Philippe Louis de Wittelsbach (1547 † 1614), Count Palatine of Neubourg
  • Madeleine (1553 † 1633), married in 1579 in Jean de Wittelsbach (1550 † 1604), Count Palatine of Zweibrücken
  • Charles Frederic (1555 † 1575)
  • Elisabeth (1556 † 1561)
  • Sibyl (1557 &daggger; 1627), married in 1601 in Charles de Habsbourg (1560 † 1618), count de Burgau
