Guillaume de Barrême de Châteaufort

Guillaume de Barrême de Châteaufort , knight, is a French painter, born with Arles on January 6th 1719, there deceased on November 6th 1775.

Biography

Guillaume de Barrême de Châteaufort is resulting from an Jewish family coming from Navarre; the first to be settled in Provence, with Tarascon and Arles, is a doctor, Solomon of Rabissa, Néophyte baptized with the whole beginning of the 16th century under the name of Jean de Barrême , and naturalized French by letters of 1541. The family is then anoblie thanks to legal loads.
Married in 1750 with Elisabeth de Campan with whom it has a girl, it leaves it about 1758 to live with Catherine Raspal, sister of her friend the painter Antoine Raspal who initiates it with painting; they have four children between 1760 and 1772, of which the painter Jacques Réattu.
Quelques years before its death, it goes to Rome, where it is received member of an Academy of painting. According to Bonnemant, Barrême de Châteaufort only paints to have fun and does not benefit any from its brush; it is a pleasant epicurean:
It had extremely suspect feelings as regards religion and did not respect morals of it.
Beside painting, it has another passion, the flowers which it cultivates in its country house known as Seignorette in Crau of which it makes its place of residence. And this passion is fatal for him:
a pink gave him death; while wanting to gather one of them, it was piqué with the finger; he scorned this wound; imperceptibly it became dangerous and ends up being mortal. It expired when it was believed in health and the priest of the parish had only time to manage the extreme unction to him, that it accepted in the lethargy and without apparent knowledge. He died on November 6th, 1775 .
He is the godfather of his first cousin Jean-Baptiste de Piquet, marquis de Méjanes.
