Biography
Guillaume V of Hesse-Cassel succeeds in stabilizing the saving in his country by a monetary reform. He also tried to reduce the weight of the debt left by his father.
At the time of the Guerre Thirty Year old it was the ally of the king Gustave II Adolphe of Sweden.
After the signature of the Paix of Prague (May 30th 1635), Guillaume V of Hesse-Cassel signed a treaty of alliance with the France what caused the invasion of Hesse-Cassel by the troops of the emperor. Guillaume V of Hesse-Cassel lost his possessions and could not settle its debts of an amount of 2,5 million guilders, of which a part was contracted by his/her father. Guillaume V of Hesse-Cassel was regarded as the enemy of the Empire and had to escape with his family.
Guillaume V of Hesse-Cassel finishes his days in exile. His wife successfully ensured regency during the minority of her son Guillaume VI of Hesse-Cassel of 1637 1626.
Guillaume V of Hesse-Cassel belonged to the first branch of the Maison of Hesse, itself resulting from the first branch of the House of the Brabant. This branch is oldest of the House of Hesse, its ascending is the Voters of Hesse and Hesse-Philippstal.
