Guillaume the Large was count de Poitiers of 1030 with 1038 under the name of Guillaume IV and duke of Aquitaine under the name of Guillaume VI during the same period. He succeeds his father Guillaume Large the.
He is beaten and made captive by the count d' Anjou Geoffroi Martel (wire of Foulques Nerra) and the Viscount of Thouars Geoffroy II of Thouars, in 1033 close to Saint-Jouin-with-Marnes. He is released against ransom only three years later. He sets out again immediately in war in 1036, but is rebattu, and must yield the island of Oléron.
During all its reign, it had to face the adversity of his mother-in-law Agnès of Burgundy, the third woman of sound father, which had been remariée with Geoffroi Martel.
It creates a beginning of administration by naming a provost with Poitiers in 1032.
