Guillaume VIII of Brunswick

Frederic Auguste Guillaume VIII of Brunswick , duke of Brunswick-Lunebourg, born the April 25th 1806 with Brunswick and dead the October 18th 1884 with Sibyllenort, reigned on the Duché of Brunswick of 1830 with 1884.

Biography

Second wire of Frederic-Guillaume of Brunswick (1771 - 1815) and of Marie de Bade (1782 - 1808), it was placed under the supervision of the prince de Galles George of England, also regent of the the United Kingdom and prince de Hanovre, with died of his father in 1815.

He became major in the Prussian army in 1823. In 1830, when his/her brother, Charles II of Brunswick, were deposited following a revolution, it went up on the throne like general Lieutenant then, in 1831, it was recognized by the Germanic Diet like duke reigning under the terms of his own right, Charles II being declared unable to reign. Guillaume let his ministers essentially control and spent most clearly his time apart from his States or in his personal possessions of Oels.

In 1866, Guillaume joined the Confédération of Germany of North, dominated by the Prussia, but this one refused to recognize like its heir his more close relative in male line, Ernest-Auguste, 3rd duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, because of the claims of this one on the Hanover.

When Guillaume died in 1884, Ernest-Auguste inherited his personal possessions, but it could not inherit the duchy of Brunswick: in a constitutional crisis in Brunswick resulted which untied only with the accession with the throne of Ernest-Auguste III, wire of the duke of Cumberland, in 1913.

Guillaume had died unmarried, but by leaving many natural children.

Genealogy

Guillaume VIII of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel belongs to the second branch (Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel) resulting from the first branch (Brunswick-Lüneburg) of the Maison of Brunswick, itself resulting from the downward Maison of Este of the dukes of Toscane.

Guillaume VIII of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was the last duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel pertaining to the second branch.
