Guillaume Rondelet

Guillaume Rondelet , born the September 27th 1507 with Montpellier and dead the July 30th 1566 of Dysentery, is a Médecin and a Naturaliste French famous for its work on the Poisson S.

Wire of merchant, Rondelet undertakes studies in its birthplace where it obtains his title of doctor in 1537. He becomes the particular doctor of the cardinal of Tournon and accompanies it in various voyages, in particular in Italy and with the Netherlands.

It receives the pulpit of medicine with died of Pierre Laurent with the Medical college of Montpellier where it will influence very many scientists of its time. It takes an active part in the construction of an amphitheater in the faculty which Henri II makes build. This amphitheater makes it possible Rondelet to make its demonstrations by the dissection of many corpses.

Even if it did not publish of work of Botanique, it exerts in this field a considerable influence. It meets in particular Ulisse Aldrovandi and is the professor of Jean and Gaspard Bauhin, of Conrad Gessner, Charles of the Lock, Léonard Rauwolf, Mathias of Obel (Rondelet bequeaths its manuscripts to him), of Jacques Daléchamps, Pierre Richer de Belleval

It becomes, in 1556, chancellor of Faculty after the death of Jean Schyron.

Among works which it published, we can quote:

  • Of piscibus marinis, libri XVIII, in quibus veræ piscium effigies expressæ sunt (1554, Lyon);
  • Universæ aquatilium historiæ leave deteriorated, cum verisipsorum imaginibus (1555);
  • whole History of the fish (1558, Lyon), entirely in French and accompanied by engravings on wood.
  • Methodus of materia medicinali and compositione medicamentorum Palavii (1556)…

It is its Histoire of the fish which ensures the greatest fame to him. It described there 244 species of the Mediterranean. Very critical for the old texts, it rejects all that can appear to him to be a fable. The illustrations, on wood, make it possible perfectly to recognize the various species. It finishes De Piscibus Marinis on these words:

Or if it of I has which take things so much with rigor, which does not want anything apparouver which is not perfect whole, I request them of good good cuor to treat such, or some other history perfectly, without it I having thing unspecified to repeat and will receverons it high E will rent vouluntiers well. However I scai well, and comfort me… with great work… which one will be able to find several good things E worthy of hirings or proufit E satisfaction at the homes studies E to the honor E grandissime admiration of very the excellens E perfaits works of God.

He is model of the character of Doctor Rondibilis in the Tiers book of François Rabelais (1483 or 1494-1553).
