Guillaume Ier of the Netherlands

Guillaume Frederic of Orange-Nassau or Willem Frederik van Oranje-Nassau in Dutch ($the Hague, August 24th, 1772 - Berlin, December 12th, 1843).

He was prince d' Orange, Stathouder of the United Provinces of 1813 with 1815, king of the Netherlands of 1815 with 1840 under the name of Guillaume 1st, duke of Luxembourg of 1815 with 1815, large-duke of Luxembourg of 1815 with 1840. This kingdom was created with the Congrès of Vienna and extended on current the Benelux.

Biography

He refused first once the throne in December 1813, then finally accepted it with a constitution which guaranteed capacities extended to new the Stathouder (sovereign prince). He proclaimed king of the Netherlands only in March 1815.

He tried to link the two people, of old the Plain Provinces and Austrian Netherlands, by a policy supporting economic development. Thus, it decided drain of the Sambre, the digging of the Canal Ghent-Terneuzen and it founded the Université of Liege. However, its policy in favor of the use of the Dutch and especially its hostility towards the Catholic church caused the dissatisfaction with the future Belgians. After the Belgian revolution of September 1830, it stood as a candidate to the throne of Belgium, but its candidature was unanimously rejected. In 1831 the Belgium obtained its independence. However the Netherlands and the Eastern half of Luxembourg (become in 1839 the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg) remained plain under the reign of Guillaume 1st. Guillaume 1st abdicated in 1840.

Guillaume Ier of the Netherlands belonged to the sixth branch (Nassau-Dietz) resulting from the second branch (Nassau-Dillenbourg) of the Maison of Nassau. This line of Nassau-Dietz today Orange-Nassau belongs to the stem ottonienne which gave stathouders to the Flanders, the Holland, the Frise, the Zealand, the Gueldre, a king with the England and the Scotland in the person of Guillaume III of Orange-Nassau, kings and queens with the Netherlands.

In 1791, Guillaume Ier of the Netherlands married Wilhelmine of Prussia (1774 - 1837), (girl of Frederic-Guillaume II of Prussia).

Four children were born from this union:

  • Frederic Guillaume of Orange-Nassau (1797 - 1881), in 1825 it married Louise of Prussia (1808 - 1870), (girl of Frederic Guillaume III of Prussia), four children were born from this union

  • Charlotte of Orange-Nassau (1800 - 1806)

  • Marianne of Orange-Nassau (1810 - 1883), in 1830 it married Albert of Prussia (1872), divorced in 1849.
