Guillaume Ier de Hesse-Cassel (1466-1515)

Guillaume Ier de Hesse-Cassel (Wilhelm Ier von Hessen-Kassel), born the July 4th 1466, deceased the February 8th 1515 with Cassel.

He was landgrave of Hesse-Cassel of 1471 to his abdication in 1493.

Family

Wire of Louis III of Hesse (1438-1471) and Mathilde of Wurtemberg.

Guillaume Ier de Hesse-Cassel married in 1488 Anne of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1460 - 1520).

Five children were born from this union:

  • Mathilde de Hesse-Cassel (1489 - 1489)

  • Mathilde de Hesse-Cassel (1490 - 1558), in 1527 it married the count Conrad von Tecklembourg (1493 - 1557)

  • Anne de Hesse-Cassel (1491 - 1513), it entered the orders

  • Catherine de Hesse-Cassel (dead in 1525), in 1511 it married the count Adam von Beichlingen (death in 1538)

  • Elisabeth de Hesse-Cassel (1503 - 1563), in 1525 it married the duke Louis II of the Double-deckers, widow in 1532 it married in 1541 the Count Palatine of Simmern Georges (death in 1569)

Biography

He was very early under the religious influence of his mother. Probably suffering from syphilis, Guillaume Ier de Hesse-Cassel made a pilgrimage and entrusted his government of Hesse-Cassel to his young brother Guillaume II of Hesse, then withdrew himself and died in 1515.

Guillaume II of Hesse-Cassel belonged to the first branch of the Maison of Hesse, itself resulting from the first branch of the House of the Brabant. Nowadays, all the branches of Hesse are extinct, only the branches having for ascending the Voters of Hesse and Hesse-Philippstal remain.
