Guillaume IV of Poitiers

Guillaume Fièrebrace (935 - 995) was count de Poitiers of 963 with 995 under the name of Guillaume II and duke of Aquitaine under that of Guillaume IV during the same period. He succeeds his father Guillaume III of Poitiers.

He marries Emma, girl of Thibaut the Cheater, count de Blois, into 968 from which he has Guillaume Large the, which succeeds to him. His/her Adélaïde sister marries Hugues Capet.

He is regarded as a warrior of value, which imposes its authority to the lords and to Viscounts of the Poitou. He resists victoriously to the king of France Hugues Capet which tries to seize Poitiers in 988. But its many adulteries sully its reign, in particular its connection with Aldéarde de Thouars, causing the departure of his Emma wife of Blois. It disappears from the written sources, the monks writers probably refusing to speak about an inaccurate lord. After a not very durable bringing together with his wife, it reappears some time, before redisparaître towards 993.
