Guillaume IV of Hainaut

Guillaume de Wittelsbach born the April 5th 1365, died with Bouchain the May 30th 1417, was duke of Bavaria-Straubing ( Guillaume II ), count de Hainaut ( Guillaume IV ), of Holland and Zealand ( Guillaume VI ) of 1404 to 1417, wire of Albert Ier, duke of Bavaria-Straubing, count de Hainaut, of Holland and Zealand, and Marguerite of Silesia-Brieg.

It carried the alive one of his father the title of count d' Ostrevant . It was distinguished in its youth by its address with the tournament and took part in engagements against English on behalf of the king de France Charles V. It then took part in a Baltic crusade with the Ordre Teutonique. Returned to the Netherlands, it went to England where it briat in tournaments and was accepted in the Order of the Garter. His/her father had become unpopular because of his private life, and the mistress of this last was assassinated. Guillaume, who seemed to be allied to the conspirators, had to take refuge at the Court of France. He will be forgiven only when he offered to go in Plank to avenge death for his great-uncle Guillaume II and to reconquer this area, which he successfully did in 1402.

He succeeded his father in 1404, and he initially had to repress a revolt in Hainaut, led by the lords of Arkel. Those, overcome, sold their grounds with the duke of Gueldre, but Guillaume refused to accept the sale and combatit the duke of Gueldre during seven years and recovered the seigniory. His/her brother Jean, prince-bishop of Liege having been driven out of Liege, it combatit Inhabitants of Li2ege to give his brother on his episcopal throne. Combined with Burgundian, it intervened at their sides in the Civil war between Armagnacs and Burgundian, but Hainaut was devastated by the troops which clashed with the Bataille of Azincourt (1415).

He died two years later leaving a sixteen years old heiress and hillocks with the intrigues and the ambitions. He was buried with Valencians (Church of the Minors).

Marriage and child

In 1385, he married Marguerite of Burgundy, girl of Philippe II Bold the, duke of Burgundy and of Marguerite, countess of Flanders, sister of Jean without Peur, duke of Burgundy, and had only one girl:
  • Jacqueline (1401 † 1436), countess of Hainaut, Holland and Zealand.

He left several illegitimate wire.
