Guillaume IV of Bavaria

Guillaume IV of Bavaria , known as Guillaume Constant the (born the November 13rd 1493 with Munich; † March 7th 1550 in the same city) was duke of Bavaria of 1508 to 1550, and definitively reunified under the same crown Bavaria of Munich in Bavaria-Landshut.

Biography

In 1514, his/her brother Louis X of Bavaria-Landshut raised complaints against him. The Bavarian ones feared a return of the hostilities of the war of succession of 1505, but under the pressure of the emperor, Guillaume agreed to share the capacity: Louis would manage Landshut and Straubing since the old capital of Landshut. With its death in 1545, Louis X him léga his strongholds in accordance with the oath of Wittelsbach.

The April 23rd 1516, day of the Holy Georges, it promulgated in its duchy the decree of purity on the beer, which governs until today the composition of the Bière (on April 23rd is celebrated since 1994 like the Day of German beer).

In 1524 it was let convince by the new Pope to withdraw the titles of nobility to the bishops of Bavaria, to accommodate the institutions of the Church for the promotion of the Catholicisme, and was one of the keenest adversaries of the Réforme, which it did not let be established in his duchy. It supported Charles Quint in 1546-47 against the Ligue of Smalkade, but the title of Elector Palatine did not manage to obtain n the other hand. After having, by the reception of the Jesuits, fact of the university of Ingolstadt a refuge for the German catholic clerks, it died in 1550. His/her son Albert V of Bavaria succeeded to him.

Family and posterity

Guillaume IV married the October 5th 1522 with Munich the princess Jacqueline Marie de Bade (1507-1580), girl of the margrave Philippe Ier de Bade and of the princess Elisabeth de Palatinat. He had four children of this union:

Of its marriage with Margarete Hausner von Stettberg, it had a son, the knight Georg von Hegnenberg (1509-1590).
