Guillaume II of Provence (982 C † 1018), known as the Piles .

Count de Provence (993-1018); he cannot recover the title of marquis who falls to his uncle Rotboald Ier.

He is the son of Guillaume Ier says the Liberator (c.955-993). His/her mother is more dubious: many historians retain Azelais of Anjou also known under the names of White, Alix or Adélaïde of Anjou (947-1026), but Guillaume II is more probably the son of Arsinde de Comminges (c.950-c.983), the first woman of Guillaume Ist He should however be noted that two of wire of Guillaume II carry first names typically angevins.

Biography

He is quoted for the first time in 990 in a charter signed by his father the count Guillaume Ier, the countess Adélaïde and his uncle Rotboald.

Count in 993, whereas he is still child, he becomes it indeed in 999.

Towards 1002, it marries Gerberge of Burgundy-County, girl of Othon Guillaume, count de Bourgogne and of Ermentrude de Roucy, countess of Mason and Besancon, known as of Rheims.

It takes part in 1005 in the assembly chaired by her mother (?) the Adélaïde countess who regulates the condition of the Abbaye of Saint-Victor of Marseilles.

In 1008 with died of his/her uncle Rotboald, Guillaume being too young to exert with authority the function comtale, the aristocracy puts the capacity comtal causes some in a revolt which is only the first of long series. The peerage-book new generation disputes with violence the pious donations granted by the marquis and his entourage. It is only in 1009 that the Adelaïde countess succeeds with difficulty of restoring peace.

In the past the fortress of Fos, which ordered the entry of the pond of Berre where the many saline ones were, like Hyères, had been entrusted to a Viscount, Pons. However, this one refused the homage and the restitution with the count in 1018. With the assistance of the Foulques Viscount of Marseilles, Guillaume left in war against Pons de Fos, but it was killed in the engagements, in 1018.

The county of Provence was divided (in joint possession) between its three sons:

  • Guillaume IV (before 1013, † between 1019 and 1030), count de Provence, known by various acts of which a donation with the Saint-Victor abbey of Marseilles. It did not have a posterity.
  • Foulques Bertrand (1014, † 1051), count de Provence. Its share became then the county of Forcalquier.
  • Geoffroi (1015, † 1061-2), count de Provence
