Guillaume Farel

Guillaume Farel , born in a family of notable with Gap in 1489 and died in Neuchâtel the September 13rd 1565, is the principal reformer of the French-speaking Switzerland .

He leaves to study with Paris at the 20 years age, attends Lefèvre d' Étaples with the Collège of the cardinal Lemoine, and belonged to the Cénacle of Meaux, joined together by the bishop Guillaume Briçonnet who launches a evangelic experiment in the years 1519-1525.

After the judgment by the Sorbonne, he preaches with enthusiasm in the Dauphiné and in Suisse. He goes in particular to Zurich, at Ulrich Zwingli, and Strasbourg, at Martin Bucer. He makes pass Neuchâtel to the Réforme in 1530. He also preaches the Reform in the Country of Montbeliard.

He is established with Geneva in 1532, becomes minister there, and attracts there Jean Calvin, with which he operates the reform in this ville : but it is not long in being scrambled with Calvin, at the time of arguments on the Cène. He is banished of Geneva in 1538 for his excessive rigorism and withdraws himself with Neuchâtel, where he dies.

There are of him some theological works, written in French:

  • the Sword of the spirit;
  • Holy Cène of the Lord , etc
