Guillaume Delisle

Guillaume Delisle , born with Paris the February 28th 1675 and died in Paris the January 25th 1726, is a Cartographe French.

His/her father is Claude Delisle. Raise Cassini, it publishes in 1700 its first charts, the Chart of the world and the Chart of the continents . These charts, like those which it produces thereafter, contribute to establish its fame. It makes use of work of the Astronome S of second half of the 17th century and screens all the books of navigation and all the charts which it can find to produce of the more precise charts, which exceed all those done before him. He works on the seven continents, one by one, and on the France in particular. On the disputed points, it quotes its source on the chart or writes additional notes which still exist in the files of the Academy of Science. One of its rules consists in using a fixed scale of measurement for areas close from/to each other. In addition to its corrections based on astronomy, the exhaustiveness of its Topography and the care granted to the Orthographe of the names remained famous.

It becomes in 1702 raises Academy of Science, then assistant surnéméraire in 1716 and associated astronomer in 1718. As a professor of geography of the young person Louis XV, it receives the title of first royal geographer, title created on this occasion.

In addition to its charts, Delisle is the author of a Traité course of the rivers .
