Guignies

Guignies is a section of the common Belgian of Brunehaut, located in Walloon region in the Province of Hainaut.

It was a commune with whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

Of a surface of roughly 400 hectares, the village is bordered by the communes of Ere (Common of Tournai) to North, Wez-Velvain in North and the East, Howardries in the South, and Taintignies (Common of Rumes) in the West, and is located at a distance of 9 kilometers in the South of Tournai.

History

Formerly, the village of Guignies was only one small hamlet connected to Velvain (now hamlet attached to Wez-Velvain). Some bits of local files make it possible nevertheless to recall certain facts (for the majority anecdotic) of the village.

1107 : The village is mentioned in the form GUINGINIOE . The suffix egnies , ignies , means " demeure" , " property of a tel". Guignies was thus a seigneurery belonging to some GUI , or Guonus , or Guyon .

1108 : Denomination in the form GUENCHEM in a bubble of the Pope Pascal II. This Flemish form in hem confirms the etymology above, chem meaning remains .

1197 : Guegnies is quoted in a cartulaire of Namur.

1202 : The lord of the time is quoted in a charter of the Abbey of Saint Martin's day: Egidium de Guegnies .

1209 : One quotes the name of Gilles, knight of Goegnies in an old act.

1224 : Pierre de Guignies is quoted in a sale contract of grounds between Saint-Amand-in-Pévèle and the Abbey of Saint Martin's day.

1263 : The village takes its final name.

1288 : Evrard de Guignies, known as Ladessous , is indicated like having appeared with a sale contract of grounds between the village of Nomain and the chapter of the Cathédrale of Turned.

1304 : After the reverse of the army of Philippe Beautiful the at the time of the Battle of the gold spurs, this one returns to the load by adopting a tactic of harassing towards the Flemish militia. In August 1304, after having burned and having plundered Saint-Amand, the armies of GUI of Dampierre, Count de Flandre walk towards Tournai and camp on the heights of Saint-Maur. The troops of King de France manage to seize the convoy of carriages trasportant the vivres and oblige the Flemish troops to leave their positions to be withdrawn on Courtrai. The night which precedes their departure, they plunder the area in reprisals.

1398 : The seigneurery of Guignies belongs to Gerard de Berghe, family member of Ladessous.

1477 : The castle of Guignies, pertaining to the Ladessous family, is set fire to by the Burgundian troops. As no important passage of these troops is announced in the area at that time, the fact can be charged only to acts of armed robbery or reprisals.
