Guido Gezelle

Guido Gezelle , poet Belgian of Flemish language , was born on May 1st 1830 with Bruges and is deceased the November 27th 1899 in this same city. He was priest. When it takes the defense of the proletariat, it is sanctioned by its bishop, who names it in reprisals cleaned of the Notre-Dame parish to Courtrai, then poorest of Flanders. Its first works, Vlaemsche Dichtoefeningen (1858) and Kerhofblommen (1858), translate from the start its control of the art of poetry. He writes for his pupils of the college of Roulers of the simple and tender poems, in Dutch, intended to wake up their spirituality. The first quoted collection contains the famous poems entitled Het Schrijverke and O, 'T ruischen van het ranke riet. In Kleengedichtjes (1860) and Gedichten, Gezangen in Gebeden (1862) are two other well-known poems, where dominates the lyric expression of religious feelings, Als of ziele luistert and Gij badt COp eenen berg. Guido Gezelle remains, during 30 years, without anything to publish, then appear Tijdkrans in 1893, and Rijmsnoer in 1897. These works confirm its linguistic virtuosity, thanks to which it expresses its mystic love towards God and creation. Gezelle is the large modern poet of the Flemish language.
