Guido Calabresi
Guido Calabresi (born in 1932 with Milan, Italy -) is an American lawyer and judges at the Court of Appeal for the Second Circuit. Former senior of the Faculty of Law of Yale to the United States, where he is also professor since 1959. Calabresi is considered, with Ronald Coase, Richard Posner and Henry Manne, as one of the founder of the economic Analyze of the right (or “Law & Economics”).
Biography
It is one of wire of the cardiologist Massimo Calabresi and the specialist in European literature Bianca Maria Finzi-Contini. The Calabresi family has immigrant with the the United States for political reasons in 1939 and obtained American nationality in 1948. Guido Calabresi is married in Anne Gordon Audubon Tyler (anthropologist) and had three children, Anne Calabresi Oldshue, psychiatrist, Massimo Franklin Tyler Calabresi, journalist and Bianca Finzi-Contini Calabresi.
Formation
Guido Calabresi receives a B.S. dismantles (“summa cum laude”, higher possible distinction) of the faculty of Yale in 1953, being received first during economic scenes (choice which will have all its importance in its later research). It is then selected to be “Rhodos Scholar” (very prestigious purse universtaire), studying in Magdalen College with Oxford and at the University of Oxford where it obtains a B.A. with the honor in 1955. It receives its doctorate of right (LL.B.) of Yale in 1958, while being always first of its class, it is then also a member of the leading committee of the “ Yale Law review ”. It obtains then the post of clerk of Justice from the judge with the Supreme court Hugo Black between 1958 and 1959.Career
Calabresi becomes member of the Faculty of Law of Yale after its passage to the post of clerk, and was senior of 1985 there with 1994. It has today the position of “Sterling Professor & Professor Emeritus off Law” and of “Professorial Lecturer in Law” always with the faculty of Yale. In 1994, President Bill Clinton names it at the post of Judge at the Court of Appeal for the second circuit. President Clinton is him also a former student of the Faculty of Law of Yale Law School, although it never had Calabresi as professor. Among the former students of Calabresi and the participants in his seminars, one can find the former judge at the supreme court Samuel Alito, the lawyer feminist pro Catherine MacKinnon, and a law professor of Harvard Richard H. Fallon Jr.Calabresi is, with Ronald Coase, Richard Posner and Henry Manne, one of the founders of the current of the economic Analyze of the right (“Law & Economics”). Its work pioneers on the matter proposes the application of the economic argument at the civil law and a legal interpretation of the Théorème of Coase. Its first work in this field (1961) follows closely those of Ronald Coase (1960) but is distancient some by more legal considerations of order and a reflection in terms of Justice and equity (through the questions of redstribution, completely put at the variation by the École of Chicago, Posner at the head). The opposition of Calabresi and Richard Posner could give rise to two schools distinct from economic analysis of the right; Posner and Chicago remaining the dominant position and Calabresi finding leader of the school of “New Haven” (with Susan Rose-Ackerman, for example).
Calabresi was reward for its work by more than 40 foreign university degrees on a purely honorary basis.
