Guiche

Guiche is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Located in the province of the Labourd, Guiche belongs to the Basque Country.

Its name Basque is Gixune .

The name of inhabitant is gixundar out of Basque and guichot in Gascon.

The commune is crossed by the Adour and its affluent the Bidouze like by the tributary of this one, the brook of Armoun.
An affluent of the Merry , the brook of Termi, also sprinkles the commune.

Toponymy

The toponym Guiche appears in the forms Villa Guissen (XIIe, cartulaire of Bayonne) and Sanctus Joannes de Guiche (1687, collations of the diocese of Bayonne).

History

Paul Raymond, Viscount of Béarn, whose Charles VII had made his general lieutenant, the castle of Guiche, who confluence of Adour and Bidouze, protects the entry from the Labourd, fall to the hand from his attackers (December 15th, 1449), opening the voice with one equipped warlike which led Gaston IV through Labourd until Saint-Jean-with-Luz.
Single railway station of the Canton of Bidache, the Station of SAMES-Guiche, on the line of Bayonne to Toulouse, was inaugurated in 1912 and will have accommodated travellers until second half of the 20th century.

Economy

The economy is mainly agricole.
A limestone quarry remains on the commune. It fed until 1993 the cement factory of Cements of Adour located at Boucau, by barges descending Adour.
An activity of manufacture of pieces of furniture also exists in Guiche.

Culture and inheritance

Civil inheritance

The castle of Guiche, also remains dukes of Gramont, has a high position and its walls are a very great thickness. After set fire tobeing set fire to, strengthened, rebuilt, taken by storm and devastated, its ruins are today in work of restoration just like the Château of Bidache.
