Guerrero

The Guerrero is a state south of the Mexico whose capital is Chilpancingo (Ciudad Bravo). It is named thus in homage to Vicente Guerrero, a Mexican politician who fought actively for the independence of Mexico.

Geography

It is bordered in the south by the Pacific Ocean on 500 km like by the states of the Michoacán in the west, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla in north, and Oaxaca in the east.

It is a mountainous state crossed by the Sierra Veined LED On which has several tops higher than 3.000 meters, like Cerro Teoptepec culminating with 3.705 meters. Its surface is approximately 64.282 km ² and its population is estimated at 3.167.400 of inhabitant (2003).

The climate is tropical. Thus a rather hot and wet period ago (from May to October) during which some hurricanes can appear and a period when precipitations are done much rarer (from November to April).

It is cut out in 7 administrative areas:

  • Acapulco,
  • Central
  • Costa Chica
  • Costa Large
  • Montaña
  • Norte
  • Tierra Caliente

Economy

Its principal activities are agriculture and tourism. They cultivate cereals (corn, rice, sorghum) and fruits (tomato, melon, banana,…). Many ores are also present on all the territory (gold, money, copper, marble, quartz, gypsum)

It is also an important tourist destination (8 million visitors in 2002) and in particular in the Triángulo del Sol , the triangle of the sun. It is an area formed by the towns of Taxco, Acapulco, Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo.

However, the state of Guerrero is also famous for its violence and its social inequalities. Many an ONG as Amnesty International as well as the Haut-Commissariat of the United Nations to the human rights denounces violations of the human rights regularly there.
