Guastalla

Guastalla is a common of the Province of Reggio of Emilie in the area Emilie-Romagna in Italy.

History

Guastalla is a zone where one finds vestiges of Roman epochs and Etruscans. It is the birthplace of the count Ferdinand Ier Gonzague (1507-1557). The surroundings of Guastalla were the witness of a battles on September 19th, 1734 between the troops free-Sardinians and the imperial troops of Austria within the framework of the War of succession of Poland. This battle gained by the free-Sardinians was the last of the conflict on the Italian ground.

Monuments

  • Statue of bronze of the count Ferdinand Ier Gonzague who overcomes the jealousy and calumny. The sculptor of this work is the artist Leone Leoni, who worked for the king Charles Quint. In 1594 the statue was installed on the current place.
  • On this place is the town hall, the Ducal Palate, the church of San Pietro and San Paolo (1575).
  • Street Garibaldi, one finds the library Maldotti (ex convent Jesuit) with a collection of 100000 pounds, coins and paintings.
  • Opposite the library there is the communal theater in the shape of “U”, built at the time of Ferdinand III in 1671.
  • With proximié, there is a popularly named civic tower “el campanón” where a castle destroyed by the Spaniards in 1689 was.
