Guarda is a Municipalité (in Portuguese: concelho or município ) of the Portugal, located in the District of Guarda and the area Centers.

It is a Ville Portuguese E, capital of the District of Guarda.

Placed at 1.056 meters of altitude, culminating point of the Portugal, it is placed in the Région Center of the Portugal, belongs to the statistical subregião on the Northern Interior Side.

The Commune of Guarda has 717.88 km ² sector and 44.084 inhabitants (2001), subdivided in 55 parishes.

The Ville is limited to the North-East by the town of Pinhel, with is by Almeida, South-east by the Sabugal, the south by Belmonte and Covilhã, in west by Gouveia and the North-West by Celorico da Beira.

History

The territory of the municipality was amputee, in 2001, by the detachment of the parish of Vale de Amoreira and its fastening with the municipality of Manteigas.

1199 - Established the city of through Charter of D. Sancho I, on November 27th. At summer established with the intention to be used as administrative center of trade, of organization and defense of the border on the Side against the Kingdoms of Meseta of the center of the Iberian peninsula:

first Kingdom of Lion, then Castille and finally Spain. It was this intention which it gave the name of City of the Guard.
