Guîtres

Guîtres is a common French, located in the department of the the Gironde and the area Aquitaine.

The city owes its name with Latin Aquistriae (3 water) because it is crossed by 3 cours d' water (the Isle, the Lary and the Galostre).

Geography

Guîtres is one of the main cities of the Pays Gabaye. It dominates the valley of the Isle.

History

Guîtres is a independent Seigneurie since the XIIe century.

The Bubble of 1171 of the Pope Alexandre III, quotes the religious buildings of Chamadelle, Paintings, Porchères, Fieu, among those given to the Abbey of Guîtres.

At the time of the War One hundred Year old, the region was devastated at the point to have the majority of its parishes known as " deserted or vacantes" of 1360 with 1410 approximately. The contribution of a population of the close septentrional areas, Saintonge, Poitou, the Vendée, redynamisa then the territory which one called " Country Gabaye ".

In 1548, the peasants of Guîtres revolted against the Gabelle.
