History

The semaphore (old Atalaye), always places, was used from there as observation post of the whales in bay, and the pirates.

When Guéthariars saw the Baleine S, they killed their traînières from the port and left to harpoon them. When they were attacked by pirates or bands of brigands, they took refuge in the farm " Ostalapia" on the way of Ahetze (it is an old relay of Saint-Jacques-of-Compostelle).

Guéthary became a Seaside resort, thanks to its wild beaches, its algae and its splits, and since 1959, with its " spots" of (" Gros") Surfing ( Avalanche Beach of Cénitz, Alcyons, the wave of Parlementia divided with Bidart) and with its geographical position between Biarritz and Saint-Jean-with-Luz.

Formerly there was a " tramway" who connected these two cities along the RN 10, it forked at the exit of Guéthary and borrowed the " Way of Trinquet".

Lastly, for the anecdote, it should be known that the court, the armies and Louis XIV, crossed the street of the Church, after having borrowed the street of the Schools, then the way of the Emperor, (which were not called thus at the time…). They went quite simply to Saint-Jean-to-Luz for the marriage of the king with Infante of Spain! A few centuries later it is the German army left to the conquest Spain which on the RN10 crossed Guéthary for finally arréter to Hendaye following the agreements concluded between Hitler and Franco.

True story: Guéthary was quarantined a whole night, in August 1963 a lion escapes from a travelling circus stationed opposite the pension " Bichta Eder" , Which occurred Guetaria, around 9 p.m. 30 and wanders in the commune all the night, killing out of a blow of claw a child; it is cut down in the small hour, Chemin Dochenia, by a motorist set on Safari which held in its trunk a rifle… because neither the firemen nor the gendarmerie had some at the time. This motorist, called " Gaby " , returned at his place late in the night; he was indeed the owner of a night club " Tagada" sails very about it at the time!
