History
It is at the 7th century that Lantarius, count of Limoges, persuaded the Pardulphe monk (or Holy Pardoux) to join his rural field of Garactus . Pardulphe, hitherto hermit considered for his capacities of Miracle-worker, became there abbot of a monastery around whose a village is built. The unit was shaved by the Norman ones at the 9th century, but a modest city was rebuilt there, giving rise to Guéret.guéret|guéret
The name of the city would come owing to the fact that the first dwellings were built with the accesses of the guérets, i.e. the plowed but not sown fields.
The city became in 1514 capital of the High step, and its vocation of administrative seat was confirmed in 1790 when the city was selected like chief town of the department.
