Grzegorz de Sanok

Gregoire de Sanok (born in 1406, dead the January 29th 1477 with Rohatyn, professor with the Academy of Cracow, Archbishop of Lwow starting from 1451, first representative of the Humanism in Poland, critical of the philosophy scholastic.

Biography

Grzegorz, born in the surroundings of Sanok, in poor middle-class family, profited first of all from an education in Poland. It supplemented it in Germany after being fled of at his place at the 12 years age. On its return after 10 years of peregrinations, he became singer of church with Cracow, continuing his studies with the Academy of the city where he was registered in 1428. Graduate, it obtained in 1433 there the diploma for the occupation of professor of Roman poetry. From its studies, it withdrew an aversion for the Scolastique, a good knowledge of the Rhétorique and a great attraction for the Poésie.

It became Précepteur children of the tycoon Jan Tarnowski. Thus it was introduced at the court of the king in Cracow where it knew child the future Casimir IV Jagellon.

Grzegorz de Sanok travelled in Italy, was accepted at the court of the pope Eugene IV, visited Florence. In love with the books, it brought back a big number of it, partly bought, partly recopied its hand whose celebrates it genealogiis deorum gentilium of Boccace or the Bucoliques of Virgile. Its return to Cracow in 1439 triumphal, was awaited by a medium of scholars and students impatient to take note of the new books brought. It was named abbot of Wieliczka, maintaining close contacts with the intellectual medium of Cracow.

In the years 1440 - 1450 it remained in Hungary where he was teacher of wire of Jean Hunyadi, residing a time at the court of the Vitez bishop.

Become king de Pologne, Casimir IV named Grzegorz de Sanok archbishop of Lwow in 1451, then tutor of his children. It is not far from Lwow, with Dunajow, that the new archbishop founded, on the model of the Italian Renaissance, the first humanistic circle in Poland, which will be active until its death in 1477. Came to discuss there novel ideas many scientists and the curious one about the country, but also from abroad. They also came to consult the books of the rich person library of the archbishop.

It is in Dunajow, at Grzegorz de Sanok, that humanistic Italian Filippo Buonaccorsi ( Kallimach ), obliged to flee Rome in 1468, continued for plot against the life of the pope Paul II, found refuge, as well as other Italian dissidents.
