Grus primigenia
The large crane of the caves ( Grus primigenia ) is a prehistoric Oiseau which lived in Europe today extinct.
Not systematic
The statute of species of Grus primigenia is the subject of debate. The skeletal remainders which are allotted to him imply that it is about a bird of big size like the white crane, the crane of Japan, the crane of Siberia and the crane Antigone. Certain authors think that the large crane of the caves is the current Antigone crane, others regards it as species with whole share.
Distribution and disappearance
The large crane of the caves was quoted for the first time starting from an English layer of the average Pléistocène. It is announced in 8 layers of the South-west of the France dated from the Magdalénien to the Tardiglaciaire. Not announced in France during the Holocene one, Grus primigenia was signaléà this period in Germany. The presence of the species is attested in England with the age of Iron and the species could perdurer until the beginning of the Christian era.Although one does not have of it a proof, it is quite possible that this bird of 1 m 80 and heavy up to 12 kg disappeared because of hunting.
