Grup Yorum

Yorum (Turkish “comment” in ) is a group of music creates in 1985 with Istanbul by students, with an aim of reacting to the military blow of 1980. The group, influenced at the beginning by Ruhi Known, Mahzuni Şerif, Inti It, Víctor Jara, Quilapayún and Theodorakis, was formed " to be the voice of the ground and the people of Anatolia, where the group was born, with an infusion of music revolutionary and socialiste". In little time, Yorum became a crucial name for the opposition and the fight of the rights and freedoms.

History of the group

Each year since 1987, the group left the albums and gave many concerts in Turkey and Europe, as taken part as well in hundreds of protests of mass, street demonstrations, strikes, and occupations of factories and universities. The members of the group faced many cases of police custody, arrests and prohibitions due to nature organisational-revolutionist-activist of the group and unmatched direction in the contents and the presentation of their music. Several members of the group were tortured on many occasions and were condemned to many years of emprisonnement  ; even CD and the cassettes of the group were shot by the security forces. However, all these obstacles could not prevent progress of the group.

Apart from the Turkish songs, Yorum sings songs in other spoken languages in Anatolia such as the Kurdish , the Arab and the Circassien. The group takes part in the fight for the right to practice these languages.

Musical genre

Yorum uses local instruments such as the Mey (the small oboe of Anatolia of the east), the Bağlama (lute with long handle), the Kaval (flageolet, flute of shepherd), but also much of other instruments not-rooms such as the Violon, the Hautbois and especially the Guitare. Their primarily vocal and instrumental music, is based on solid rhythmic compositions and fluid melodies. This music, which can be defined like folk-rock'n'roll, contains stamps pointing out the local folksongs, the Mediterranean melodies, the Latin-American anthems and the rock'n'roll.
