Grunt

The grunt (or death grunt , or death growl , or cavernous song ) is a vocal technique which confers on the voice a stamp guttural and " monstrueux". This kind of song is created by the use of the digestive Tract and the throat, contrary to the traditional songs which disadvise this technique. Some regard these songs as a style of Chant diphonic.

In English, this vocal technique is also indicated in a pejorative or humorous way under the term of song of Cookie Monster in reference to the voice of the Macaroon character the glouton (" Cookie Monster" in English) of the emission Sesame street.

This technique is frequently employed by the groups of Death metal and a certain number of sub-genera of metal. (Grindcore, Doom death, Gothic metal in particular)

The vocal ones in death grunt are often difficult to include/understand, particularly for listeners not familiarized with the style. Many vocalists employ the inintelligible technique of way, such as Sylvain Houde of Kataklysm or Lord WORM of Cryptopsy. However certain vocalists attach an importance so that their words remain understandable, such Karl Willetts of Bolt Thrower, Alex Leblanc of Atheretic or Gerhard (Felix) Stass of Crematory.

Certain women make use also of this technique, Lori Bravo (Nuclear Death), Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), Maria Abaza (MERLIN) or Rachel Heyzer-Kloosterwaard (ex- Sinister)

Technique

Death grunts can be obtained with various effects of voice. But much of singers are able to produce them with their own voice. Professors of vocal technique teach various techniques, but the long-term use damages the voice, also the taught techniques can be only techniques of less evil, but not of risk 0. The technicians however insist on the importance to sing only with its chest voice and not with its voice of head. What implies to control the technique of traditional song of the breath by distributing the force between the diaphragm and the vocal cords. The use of the only vocal cords quickly proves limited in term of endurance and especially the voice is likely to be quickly damaged.

History and variations

One can go up the trace of the use of grunts, of monstreux vocal effects in the rock'n'roll with " I Has Spell one could You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins in 1956. The Who in their song Boris the Spider in 1966 very if in a comic intention, use gutturaux songs rather similar to the techniques employed by the modern groups of death metal. With the beginning of the year the 1970 songs " Iron Man" of Black Sabbath and " One off Thesis Days " of Pink Floyd contain briefs passages vocal low registers and gutturaux (although artificial) on bottom of heavy fronts.

But the advent of the use of this technique coincides with the gradual emergence of the Death metal, and it is difficult specifically to point an inventor of this technique.

Various vocalists probably developed the technique progressively. The group Death (and its Mantas precursors) with its two vocalists - at the origin Kam Lee and then Chuck Schuldiner - were often quoted as influences (although Schuldiner ended up leaning for a style of song more éraillé). Possessed is regarded by as one of very first to have employed the death grunt much. Of the same Necrophagia and Master. Roughly at the same time of the groups like Hellhammer with Tom G. Warrior with vocal, or of the groups of influence such as Massacre employed variations of the death grunt.

Vocalists of the British group of Grindcore Napalm Death, Nick Bullen, Lee Dorrian and Mark " Barney" Greenway - developed then the style at the end of the years 80, adding to it more aggression and of depth guttural while accelerating the flow of the words.

Since second half of the years 1990 and the beginning of the year 2000, much of vocalists developed a different technique. Instead of expiring the air, this one is inspired to produce strident grunts or very low registers. This technique makes it possible to reach tons more extreme more easily but generally made lose much sound power. Steve Marois (Despised Icon) is a user of this technique.
