Grumman

The Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation , which was caught then the name of Grumman Aerospace Corporation is during the 20th century one of the military companies producing the most Avion S and civil. Founded in 1929 by Leroy Grumman, it amalgamated at the end of the XXe century with Northrop to form the group Northrop Grumman.

History

In the Years 1920, Leroy Grumman worked for the Loening Aircraft Engineering Corporation. When this one was bought by Keystone Aircraft and that the companies moved New York towards the Pennsylvania, Leroy Grumman and its colleagues (Edmund Ward Poor, William Schwendler, Jake Swirbull and Clint Towl) launched their own company in a garage of the town of Baldwin on Long Island.

The company was legally declared the December 5th 1929 and opened its doors the January 2nd 1930. Their first products fûrent floats for the Hydravion S of the US Navy. The first plane that they produced was also designed for Navy: it was the Grumman FF-1, a biplane with retractable train. Other models succeeded to him with as much success. The company taking of the width, it moved with Valley Stream, then with Farmingdale and finally, it settled with Bethpage.

During the Second world war, Grumman became famous for its hunters: F4F Wildcat, the Grumman F6F Hellcat and for its Bomber-destroyer, the TBF Avenger. The first jet of Grumman was the F9F Panther which became operational in 1949, but its larger success of post-war period was, in the Années 1960 the Grumman A-6 Intruder and finally, in the Années 1970, the F-14 Tomcat.

Grumman was also the project manager of the lunar module of the project Apollo which made it possible to the first men to go on the Moon. They accepted the contract the November 7th 1962 and built finally 13 lunar modules. Whereas the Apollo program touched at its end, Grumman was one of the applicants to the contract to build the Space shuttle, but it was Rockwell which accepted the contract.

In 1969, the company took the name of Grumman Aerospace Corporation and in 1978, it sold Grumman-American division with the Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation. The end of the Cold war towards 1991 and its effects on the requirements in national defense led to a wave of fusions. In 1994, Grumman amalgamated with Northrop to become Northrop Grumman.
