Grumantbyen

One of many the phantom City S of the Svalbard, with Advent City, Pyramiden or Colesbukta.

The community was established on bank is Isfjorden, halfway between Longyearbyen and Barentsburg, with the beginning of the year 1910. The exploitation of the mining wells in the neighborhoods required the construction of small a Railroad with Narrow gauge railway (0,40m), to join the city very close to Colesbukta. As for all the other communities, the production fell, and quickly all was given up and left on the spot: rails, houses, tools, bones… Nothing moved since 1961, year of abandonment of the mining establishment.

A draft study of the grounds recently carried out made it possible to revalorize certain sites like Grumantbyen , and a new exploitation could be well with the day order in the next years.
