Gruissan

Gruissan is a common French, located in the department of the Aude and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is Gruissanais.

Geography

Gruissan is located in the Narbonnese country, on the coast between the solid mass of Clape and the Mediterranean. The old village, between the ponds, consists of lanes circulating around a large block of limestone on which the remainders of an old castle are located, the Barberousse tower. The village is thus a Circulade.

History

The site depended in 1224 on the archbishop on Narbonne which built the castle, destroys later by Richelieu.

Theater of bloody fights during the wars of the League.

At the 13th century seven families settled in Gruissan and their descendants were there still at last century.

At the end of the 20th century, the construction of a modern Marina made of Gruissan principal the Seaside resort of the Département of the Aude.
