Grouville

Grouville is one of the twelve Paroisse S of Jersey in the islands of the English Channel. Historically it was called “Saint Martin de Grouville” to be distinguished from the current parish of Saint Martin's day (historically Saint-Martin-the-Old man ). Located at the south-east of the island, Grouville is dominated by the great extent of Royal Bay of Grouville. The surface of the parish is of 4.354 Vergée S (7.8 km).

The Bay of Grouville acquired the name of Royale when it impressed the queen Victoria during her visit of 1846. Its broad sandy beach and its not very deep water and heat make of it a popular place for the tourists. It is also the principal producing area of Huître S of Jersey.

Formerly, Grouville was also known for its production of kelp. The family industry of burning of the kelp formerly practiced by Grouvillais their was worth, like with their neighbors of Saint-Clement the traditional nickname of Enfuntchis (Enfumés in Jersey).

In the grounds, Grouville also shelters the archeological site most remarkable of Jersey with Hougue Bie , which is today a museum managed by Jersey Heritage Trust. An artificial prehistoric monticule recovers fall it from passage aligned on the equinox. A medieval Vault, Notre Dame of the Clearness, built on the Neolithic monticule was converted with into residence on the model of the madness S of Style neogothic, the Tower of the prince (demolished in the Années 1920). During the Second world war, the German occupying forces built bunkers inside and beside the ancient monticule, also transformed today into museum.

Part of the village of Gouray is in the parish (but the port is located at Saint Martin's day).
